Supplementation 101

There is a story that a great king once sent all of the local physicians into the forest.  The king said to the physicians, “Bring me back something from the forest with no medicinal qualities.

The physicians headed into the forest to accomplish the task.  In the ensuing hours the doctors came back with all sorts of items from the forests—plants, bark, rocks, soil, etc.  By the end of the day all of the physicians had returned but one.  Finally, as the sun set and darkness began to make the forest dangerous, the last physician returned—with nothing!  When the king asked him why he did not bring something back from the forest the man replied “King, I am sorry, I looked high and low, in the trees, on the ground, and in the water—but I could not find anything without healing properties.”  The king then replied, “Then you shall be my physician!”

There are literally thousands of foods, herbs, vitamins, and minerals accessible to consumers today.  On this website you can search for a specific supplement or disorder to tailor a program for yourself on your road to health. 

In this information age we can be overcome with data on fads and exotic supplements and herbs from all over the world.  While many of these products are helpful to us in the right amount at the right time, we simply cannot take everything all of the time.  In addition, some supplements that have been touted to be wonderful can actually harm our health (see the “Taking Vitamins May Hurt Me?” section in the Dairy and Eggs article).

To help sort out the confusion I am going to give you the “Basic Plan” that I believe everyone should be on.  Please note that this plan is not a substitute for excellent nutrition!  Truly, if you eat poorly, no pill can save you.  This basic plan is intended to fill in some of the holes caused by depletion of our soils, increase your antioxidant status to aid your body in dealing with inescapable environmental toxins, and increase fatty acids that nearly everyone is deficient in.  Without further ado, here’s the plan;

  1. Organic, food based one-a-daily multivitamin/mineral.
  2. Omega-3 supplement containing 2-3 grams of combined EPA and DHA in a 2-to-1 ratio
  3. Undenatured whey protein to boost your body’s most powerful antioxidant and detoxifier, glutathione.
  4. An organic, food based antioxidant supplement.
