A new study in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood again demonstrates the critical importance of fish oil supplementation for pregnant mothers. The researchers gave mothers-to-be either 4 grams of fish oil or 4 grams of olive oil during their pregnancy. When the babies were 2 and 1/2 years old they were tested for development.
The children whose mothers took fish oil scored higher in language comprehension, phrase length (they strung more words together in their speech), and had a larger vocabulary. The most dramatic difference, however, was in hand-eye coordination, where the fish oil kids scored much higher than the olive oil kids.
I believe that every pregnant mother should be using omega-3's (unless she's on anticoagulant medication or has a bleeding disorder). It is extremely important to use a pharmaceutical grade fish oil during pregnancy to avoid exposing the fetus to mercury and PCB's. In my store I offer an excellent product, formulated specifically for pregnant and nursing mothers. It contains two times more DHA--the "brain building" omega-3--than the regular adult formula. The dry weight of an infants brain is fully 60% DHA! No wonder brain development suffers when mothers are deficient!
