Money talks--even in prestigious journals. Last year I reported on an excellent study showing that the artificial sweetener, aspartame, causes many types of cancer. It does so at levels far below what many American eat as a matter of course. This month, in that same journal, an article appeared rebutting the findings of the prior study. The rebuttal is largely an opinion piece--not actual research. One wonders how such a piece could even make its way into such a journal.
The author of the original study responded to the rebuttal, and I quote him here; "As communicated in his letter, Abegaz represents Ajinomoto Corporate Services LLC. Ajinomoto, which holds 45% of the market share for worldwide aspartame production (Ajinomoto 2006), is well known for its aggressive and effective defense of its commercial interests."
Money does talk--the rebuttal was written by a representative of a company that holds a 45% stake in the multibillion dollar aspatame market. Do you think he may be biased?
Read the rebuttal and the rebuttal's rebuttal.
