Saturday 06/17/2006 Meditation for Heart Disease and Diabetes

A new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine gives credence to mind-body medicine. Researchers taught individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD) how to meditate. After 16 weeks the meditators were compared to a similar group that was not meditating. The meditators were found to have decreased blood pressure, increased insulin sensitivity (see my article "Do You Have Metabolic Syndrome?"), and benficial changes in heart rate variability. Over the past 40 years hundreds of studies have been done on meditation and heart disease, and the conclusion is clear--meditation can play a major role in preventing and treating heart disease. Check out the study here.
