Scoliosis affects about 2 percent of the population. Most of these cases are considered "idiopathic", which basically means that we do not understand the cause. The disorder can cause a great deal of pain and is associated with a lower quality of life. Surgery for scoliosis is a big deal, with frequent poor outcomes. Bracing, another popular treatment, suffers in its efficacy due to poor compliance.
Fortunately, there is another option. Chiropractic should be the number one first-choice treatment of anyone with scoliosis. Chiropractors, as the experts in conservative spinal care, are uniquely trained to diagnose and treat scoliosis--and there is research to back it up. Many studies have highlighted the decrease in pain and improvement in quality of life for scoliosis patients under chiropractic care. A recent study evaluated the effect of chiropractic care plus rehabilitative exercises on the amount of spinal curvature in patients with scoliosis.
Astonishingly, every patient improved their curve by at least 25%! This is the best result in any study I have ever seen. Remember that scoliosis commonly shows up in children as they enter adolescence--if you have children between 10 and 14, have them checked by a chiropractor!
