It's this simple: if you have heart disease, you need to meditate. A new study confirms the fact that daily meditation improves blood vessel function in people with coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of heart attacks.
Several studies have shown that plaques (atherosclerosis) in the coronary arteries actually melt away in people who begin the practice of regular meditation. This new study shows that mediation allows the blood vessels of the heart to relax and dilate--the people who meditated for 6 weeks improved this dilation by 69%! This is extremely significant since areas with the most plaqueing constrict the most under psychological stress. This is why there are more heart attacks on Monday morning than any other time. Often Plaqueing itself in the coronary arteries is asymptomatic until a stressful event causes the arteries to further constrict. In addition to relaxing blood vessels, the
study subjects had a significant drop in blood pressure, heart rate, and in body weight! From all the research I have seen (I did my Bachelor's thesis on the role of meditation in the treatment and prevention of heart disease) I can say with confidence that meditation is an essential ingredient in the successful treatment of heart disease.
